The deleting of SMS texts issue was first reported on the N4BB blog on Wednesday.  The BB users are saying that the messages just vanish after the update while some are saying that the messages are visible but the message thread can no longer be seen.

To keep you updated, BlackBerry had released the update Over the Air (OTA) for Canada, Asia and Pacific, Europe, Middle East and Africa on Monday.  It offered some fixes and enhancements and US and Latin America were next in the list for the update.

Permission Manager App for Android 4.3 available for Free on Google Play, control your App permissions

Permission Manager App for Android 4.3 available for Free on Google Play, control your App permissions

It is always frustrating to install a App on a Android device and click on the various permissions it asks.  However during a recent tear down of Android 4.3 revealed a loop hole in the OS which lets you control the permissions required for installing any App.   But that requires rooting your phone.  Now Appoholic has released a App which lets you do just that and that too without rooting.

The Permission Manager gives you a tabbed listing of all the Apps installed on your device.  Once you tap on a select App you will be led to next screen which gives various permissions it requires and lets you switch the permissions on or off as per your choice.

The App has certain limitations and is available just as yet for Android 4.3 only but it sure is good.  You can download this free App from Google Play here.

Microsoft Office Mobile comes to Android for Office 365 subscribers like Office 365 Home Premium or ProPlus

Microsoft Office Mobile comes to Android for Office 365 subscribers like Office 365 Home Premium or ProPlus

This one is a must have for the Office 365 subscribers. Up to now only iOS devices were providing Office Mobile for Office 365 but finally Microsoft has launched the Office Mobile for Android devices.  The worse luck is that you need to be a Office 365 subscriber such as Office 365 Home Premium, Office 365 ProPlus or  such.

The App works on Android 4.0 or higher and allows you to do basic edit of Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents.   Remember Microsoft has already launched the iOS App last month, which you can get here.

Microsoft has said that that the App will be available for US users on 31st July, 2013 and can be download from Google Play here. It has said that the App will be made available for rest of the world in coming weeks.

Cynthiya Koenig's 'Wello Waterwheel' a one stop solution to the water transportation woes of millions of Indians

Water : This is one subject on which there have been debates, arguments, suggestions, advise etc.   But I am sorry to add that there is no solution in hand to the water crisis which Indians face every year.   The main problem with India is the distance between the point of water and households.  Cynthiya's research has shown that women in rural households spend more than 6 hours of their day collecting water for their respective households.
Cynthiya Koenig's 'Wello Waterwheel' a one stop solution to the water transportation woes of millions of Indians
Second problem listed by Cynthiya is that the water is too heavy for the womenfolk to carry on their heads.  Estimated 20 litres of water is carried by by each rural woman on her head on one trip.  This may lead to head pain, injury to neck and even infant mortality in some cases.

Second of the major problems the rural women face is what I have said above.  Imagine a girl aged 17 years spending 6 hours of her day time, which can be used to educate her, being wasted on water transportation.
Cynthiya Koenig's 'Wello Waterwheel' a one stop solution to the water transportation woes of millions of Indians
At a age when the girl child should be educated, they are plying water for their families.  This quality time is wasted on transportation of water from the point of origin to their house.  And 70 % of girls aged between 15 and 17 drop out of school for the sole purpose of helping out their families.  This includes the perennial water transportation problems.

Cynthiya and her team researched with the subject interacting with the rural women and taking their views into account before finding a very nice solution to this problem.
The Wello Waterwheel
Cynthiya Koenig's 'Wello Waterwheel' a one stop solution to the water woes of millions of Indians

The water wheel is a one stop answer to the problems of water transportation the rural women face.  It can carry enough water in one trip for a entire family and has a nice ergonomic cap to contain spills as well as insulate it from dirt and grime.  It has been built with sturdy plastic to withstand the sandy and rocky landscape of Rajasthan.

You can be a part of this venture from the wellowater.org.  You can advertise on the wheel with your product or spread a social message like Polio Vaccination or Safe Sex on it.  The tech student can also use its dynamics to convert the energy that is put into it to some good use like charging mobile phones or powering emergency lamps.

This campaign was brought to you by Franklin Templeton Investments partnered the TEDxGateway Mumbai in December 2012.  You can also this and many ideas on www.ftideacaravan.com.

Cynthiya and her Wello Waterwheel : Check out this fantastic video explaining all about it.

And while Cynthiya is doing her bit, we should also promise ourselves to save water!!!

Decorate and style you home with this FREE ultimate Interior Decoration App for Android Devices : Homestyler

Decorate and style you home with this FREE ultimate Interior Decoration App for Android Devices : Homestyler

This is perhaps one of the best Apps for Android I have reviewed so far because it lets you design your home the way you want it. The publisher AutoDesk has come out with this gem of an App called Homestyler.  As the name suggests, it is about styling your home the way you want it with a little help from the App.  You just have to imagine where you want your wardrobe or sofa and open the Homestyler App.  After that drag and drop the furniture items you want to the places you want to view what your home sweet home will look like after the changes.

It does help that the Homestyler has 3D images of all the items of furniture you may need at home.  The App has a built in repository of hundreds of items which you may ideally want in your house. The App also comes with stock photos or you can simply click your empty room and work around with it till the time it satisfies you and your better half.

The App lets you move and scale the furniture around to fit the room you are designing.  It also has a gallery that includes helpful links find genuine articles you may need.  You can change the colour of the wall as per your fancy and I guess that sums it up.  It makes a decent interior decorator out of you.

The webpage gives out the following features :
Snap a picture of a room to create your own 3D home design playground.
• Place high-quality 3D models of real furniture products in your rooms
• Hang light fixtures from your ceiling
• Visualize different colors and texture combinations
• See how realistic models of actual branded rugs, paintings, mirrors and more look in your space
Get inspired, get advice, get feedback
• Browse the Design Stream for pics, articles, how-to’s and more
• Share your designs with friends and family through FB and email.
• Comment on and “Heart” designs within the Design Gallery
Connect with a professional
• Browse Portfolio Pages of professional designers in your area
• Find designers who have the style and expertise you need
• Get answers to your specific product and design questions or get help on a bigger project.

CyanogenMod Nemesis teaser video appears on YouTube, check it out and read Steve Kondik's philosophy

CyanogenMod Nemesis teaser video appears on YouTube, check it out and read Steve Kondik's philosophy

Nothing much is known about the new project from Team CyanogenMOD except for the fact that it is known as Nemesis. The CyanogenMOD Nemesis has leaked just one information about the new ROM and it is about the new camera App called 'Focal'.  The Focal takes forward the Google's stock camera App released recently about which you can read here.  The Focal will be installed automatically once you install the CyanogenMOD Nemesis ROM on your phone. The App has a Google Now like radial menu with 5 options, viz. Photo, Panorama, Video, PicSphere and Switch Camera out of which the PicSphere looks like new feature.  And here to you don't have look far for inspiration behind the PicSphere. Taking a leaf out of Google's Photosphere, CyanogenMod Team has build this open source feature and it seems very nice at first glance.

However as this post is not about 'Focal', and if you want you can read about the 'Focal' and all its relevant information from AndroidHeadlines website here.

The maker of CyanogenMod, Steve Kondik has read out his philosophy behind building all the ROMs for Android.  You can read it below :
"My goal for CM has always been to break open these mostly proprietary mobile devices so we can turn them into the product we really want.  I think over the last few years, we have largely accomplished this goal- CM is available in some for almost every device imaginable. What's most important to me is that anyone can get the code, hack on it and change whatever you want, build it, and flash it to your device.

It's a huge amount of work, and has left us little time to work on other things. This is good and bad though. Just as Google made it easy for so many people to get into mobile with Android, we've made it easy for anyone to get into making their own aftermarket ROMs. It's awesome. There's so much crazy stuff that people are building that nobody has thought of before.
Nemesis is our plan to improve the user experience in the right places. The new camera app, Focal, is just the start. Without giving too much away, invoking teaser videos, or giving ETAs, I can confidently say that awesome things are going to keep coming. Watch out :)"
As you can see, the CyanogenMod's work theory involves around a simple logic, breaking open the proprietory systems around the world so that you, users can have and extract the best possible experience from your devices.

Despite Kondik saying that now teaser videos shall be available for the CyanogenMod Nemesis ROM, this one appeared on YouTube just today.  I am not saying this may be official one but it sure looks like one.  You can watch the video below and make up your own opinion about it

The video is posted by CyanogenMODTV

Zagat for Web, Android and iOS devices, locate your favourite nightspot, hotel or restaurant and check out the reviews for free

Zagat for Web, Android and iOS devices, locate your favourite nightspot, hotel or restaurant and check out the reviews for free

Now finding good restaurants, nightspots and hotels, reviewed by your peers will be easy.  Google has resurrected Zagat from the scratch and now you just need the Google Plus id to sign in and receive the reviews and ratings of your favourite haunt.  This is particularly useful if you are travelling to a unknown place and finding hotels is difficult.  It happened to me once in Goa.  As you know Goa is land of fishes and finding a good vegetarian retaurant was a pain in the ass.  But luckily for me, I met a good cab driver who directed me to a nice quaint veg restaurant which I used to visit every day during my stay in Goa.

You will not face such situations any longer.  Zagat will be available in three formats.  A website, an Android and an iOS App. On the new Zagat site, best of the best through the latest news and videos, curated lists.  You can search and get maps for the place you intend to visit.

However the at present the Zagat is being rolled out in United States with 9 cities being covered.  It may be a while before the Indian cities come into Google's radar.

However the App page lists following features
Now 100% free and re-built from the ground up. Google+ membership is required to use this app. Browse over 30,000 restaurants in the world’s top dining destinations. Concise ratings and reviews you can trust.

- Explore the world’s top dining destinations
- Find the perfect restaurant
- Refine your search with 100+ filters, including cuisines, Zagat scores, cost, and dining features (e.g. patio dining, open late, child-friendly, etc.)
- Reserve a table
- Be a critic--your quote could be printed in the next restaurant guidebook

Go to zagat.com to get a feel of what Google is offering.  To download the App for your Android go to Google Play here and for iOS devices visit Apple Store here

Not quite Instagram, Hipstamatic's Oggl updated for Windows Phone 8 and iOS lets you share images on FB, Twitter and Instagram

Not quite Instagram, Hipstamatic's Oggl updated for Windows Phone 8 and iOS lets you share images on FB, Twitter and Instagram

Its not quite Instagram but Hipstamatic's Oggl will do for your Windows Phone 8.  Till the time Facebook launches Instagram for Windows Phone, I guess this will make do.  The free version has been updated and now lets you share your images on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Oggl has also launched a PRO version for the 41MP shooter Nokia Lumia 1020 which lets you adjust white balance, ISO and shutter speed in addition to photo editing tool.

And the free version for  Windows Phone 8 lets you edit and add filters to your images pretty much like Instagram but not as good as it.  The App also lets you share your images on Instagram but you will not be able to view images posted on Instagram by your friends.

Hipstamatic also updated its iOS App to give you more photo browsing choices.  You can now tapp on hashtags to view similar images.  You can "save every version' of your edits so that you can go back to the cut you like the best.

To download free version of Oggl for Windows Phone, go to Windows Phone Store here.  If you own a Nokia Lumia 1020 and are interested in buying the PRO version, visit here.

iOS users can get their updated Oggl from Apple Store here.

Get information about Passport Services, Visa/Consular services and more with the India's Ministry of External Affairs iOS and Android App

Get the Indian Ministry of External Affairs App for iOS and Android and know the important services like Passport and visa being offered

Now getting information about the Passport services, visa services/consular services, Indian Missions abroad, E-Citizen, Media Centre and following our PM has become easy with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) launching a full fledged App both for iOS and Android devices.  The App is rather basic but gives useful information which is decently sorted out.

You can also get information about the Manasarovar Yatra or Hajj Pilgrimage on this App.  The App has a scroll wheel which gives you options like Passport Services, Follow PRM/EAM, Haj, E-Citizen, Media Centre, Public Diplomacy, Indian Missions Abroad, Visa/Consular Services, Kailash Mansavorar Yatra. To view a particular service, you have to just tap on the option and view the same.

The interface is simple and gives you the information you need. You have to select the option you want to see.  For example tapping  "Passport Services" will give you basic knowledge of instructions for obtaining a Indian National Passport and the Passport Seva Kendra's near you, tracking you application and downloading the forms.

You can also customize the home screen with your own choice of options.  To create your own screen,  you have to click on the edit button at the top right corner to select the options you did like on your screen.  You can also add your own background image to the screen.

Making Delight even better - Need your help with translations - USER RELATED PROJECT

Hi guys,
  • a lot of you reported to me, that you can't read or understand the "Resolver", "Updater" or other Delight exclusive apps.
  • and some are having problems with the Meta Data Editor mod (Mp3 Tag Editor mod) - some are still english, some make crashes, some work
So I decided to open this project to you guys, so you can help me translate Delight to perfection

It will take about 30min to 1 hour to translate it for an individual language, but if I do it, it would take at least 45x 30min/1hour = 30 to 45 hours - IF I COULD SPEAK THE LANGUAGE PERFECTLY, which I can not,
so it would take at least double the time to do it with googe translator, which is a pain in the ...

and I still have to put your translations into the correct files, so it is still a lot of work for me.

SO, if you are willing to improve the Delight translations with me, then read the rest of this post
...they are for all Devices alike, so it doesn't matter if you have C7, N8 or 808

Tutorial and stuff needed provided in the link...

...if you are willing to do a translation, then please write in the comments, which language you are going to take over, so we don't get hundreds of the same language

DO not send me the full metadata folder! just the translated file

Languages done list:

- 01 english
- 03german
- 04 spanish - thanks to David Rodríguez
- 10 american english
- 29 taiwan Delight apps done - metadata still to be made!
- 78 romanian - thanks to Tomy boy

Delight exclusive apps:

I made a excel sheet with all the strings. Please keep the translation short, but accurate

Only translate the blue Lines, and rename the excel sheet to the language you did, before reuploading
or emailing to me - for example: Delight translations - german.xls
send to freaxsrus@gmail.com

Metadata mod:

- open the RscEditor programm 2x (no installation needed, just directly from folder
- drag and drop your language file to one and the original file to compare to the other
- click string, click edit string, re-write string, confirm
- click next string, ..... and so on

- save file when you are done....

send me the file... PLEASE DON'T SEND ME THE WHOLE FOLDER, just the modded file
send to freaxsrus@gmail.com

The file to compare provided is NOT 100% the same!!!
If it would be the same, I could copy one string to the other myself
- you can copy strings that fit from one file to the other or rename them all manually
- the rest of the strings that are not in the original file must be translated manually

 VERY IMPORTANT!!! BE VERY CAREFUL:
- NO spaces or returns after string words allowed
spaces or returns after words will be shown like this: [0x0A] when you press edit after confirming
some lines have the [0x0A] new line by Nokia on perpose

- DO NOT translate strings that you do not understand
  for example: qtn_aknexpopfield_hint_text

- DO NOT change the "%U[15]"
in this line: Item will be moved to %U[15] library. Some details may be lost. Continue?

- DO NOT change the coding in these lines
  %0U[0x09]%1U, %N kbit/s, %U Hz
you can change "kbit/s" and "Hz", but not the way the %U is lined up
for languages that read from right to left (urdu, persian, arabic, hebrew, etc) ... do not write the   coding from right to left!
for example: %N كيلو بت/ثانية, %U هرتز

Should I move to WordPress from Blogger which one is good or do I keep going on Blogger

http://www.indiblogger.in/iba/entry.php?edition=1&entry=66567

Today I completed 200K visitors (as per blogger views) on comboupdates.com and am in a celebratory mood.  I started my blog at the free blogger domain with vvpvijay.blogspot.com on 16th Dec 2012 and moved to a custom domain hosted by blogger on 8th May 2013.  Within a short period of 7 months I have achieved this success due to you, my readers, So I gleefully thank you and hope you continue to visit my blog. I have also nominated comboupdates.com for IBAwards hosted by indiblogger.in.  If you like my blog, you can kindly visit here and click on the Facebook Like button and I will be ever so grateful to you.
Should I move to WordPress from Blogger which one is good or do I keep going on Blogger

The move was highly successful due to the help and guidance from Rehmat Alam an ace blogger and CEO & owner of supportivehands.net.   But Rehmant has moved on from blogger to WordPress and I to am in double mind to follow suit.

Blogger is easy to handle and FREE.  The custom domain cost me around $10.00 (Rs.600.00) and the abosulutely fabulous hosting from Google Servers for free.  But like they say in films with fame comes responsibility.  The responsibility to give more useful tutorials, Apps, games and my views on the world as a whole.

There is a deep urge inside me to move to a self hosted domain with WordPress.  But should I do it?
Pros of Blogger :
Extremely easy to use  Writing articles and posting them from Blogger is very easy.
Search ready Google owns the blogspot domain hence most of the search parameters are built in.  You have to only add the xxx.blogspot.in/sitemap.xml to the Webmaster Tools of Bing and Google and you are done.
Robust Servers  Google servers are the best there is.  The blogspot can easily take 25000+ visitors at a time(the highest I got is 460) and zero downtime you don't need to worry about bandwidth or speed.
Very easy to set up Tons of templates available for free over the netzone make it very easy to set up even if you don't know HTML. The blogger edit template option is also very easy as they come. The Layout allows you to add widgets with ease.  Blogspot can also be customised for mobile devices.
Fully integrated with Adsense (Google’s advertising division).  This one is the best features of Blogspot.  You get it for free and can monetize it if you have got good content.

Cons :
Google owns your blog  This is the biggest drawback of being on a blogspot.  One fine day you find out that you have inadvarently violated the Google ToS and Poof! your blog disappears within seconds.
Limited number of templates Though there are tons of templates available still you can't make necessary customisations you require in the template.  I was lucky to have found this wonderful template but I cannot customise it (for eg. I can't add Facebook Like popup widget.)
Limited Gadgets :  Another disadvantage with Blogspot is the limited gadgets they offer(though you can get many of them on the net)

I am undecided as of yet whether to move to WordPress or stay with blogger but am getting myself attuned to WordPress through Wamp localhost.  I have found it extremely complex in nature with a lots of plugins (there is a plugin for everything) and cutomisations. Till the time I get used to it, I might as well stay on with my good friend Google.

However if you want to move from Blogger to WordPress, Rehmat Alam, who has recently shifted to WordPress had written a nice ebook giving the advantages and the procedure of shifting to WordPress. The tutorial is a must read if you plan to migrate to WordPress without losing your visitors, SEO or SERPS.  To download the ebook authored by Rehmant Alam click here(the ebook is in PDF format) or visit his site here.

Wikipedia to let users edit Wiki entries through your smart phone or tablet through a pencil icon at the top

The world biggest library of information, the Wikipedia will now let you edit articles both from Wiki as well as your sandbox.   Wikipedia as we know is a great repository of information and there are times when we need to edit it on the go.   The newly updated wikipedia page when opened from your smart phone or tablet will give you a small pencil Icon at the top in you sign it on to it.  Click on that and now you can edit the article.
Wikipedia to let users edit Wiki entries through your smart phone or tablet through a pencil icon at the top

Once you click on the pencil Icon you will be led to a desktop like editing interface along with a preview of any changes you make before you can save and update the Wiki site.  Strange thing is that Wikipedia has not launched/updated a App either for iOS or for Android incorporating this change.

In another linked news, the AIRCEL users in India will have free access to Wikipedia.  This is part of the 'Wikipedia Zero' the Wiki's attempt to make the billion GB information it has on its sites available to the last man on earth.  The Aircel is the first mobile service operator in India to sign on to this service and provide the information free of cost to its users.

Amit Kapoor, Senior Manager, Mobile Partnerships, Wikimedia Foundation said this about the Wikipedia Zero
“It is our mission to provide free access to knowledge for everyone in the world. It’s only fitting then that today we announced our first Wikipedia Zero partnership launch in India, the world’s second most populous country with over 1.2 billion people,”

The Wikimedia guys are also going to incorporate the support for VisualEditor, a new visual interface for editing Wikipedia. VisualEditor effectively removes the need to learn the complex wiki markup language, thereby making editing simpler for both new and experienced users.  However there is no word about an update or a standalone App for the above purpose.

Play the Prince of Persia 2 : The Shadow and the Flame game on your Android and iOS devices at $2.99

Play the Prince of Persia 2 : The Shadow and the Flame game on your Android and iOS devices at $2.99

We have all played the famous Prince of Persia on our PCs at some point of time and now Ubisoft has given us a opportunity to play it on Android and iOS devices albeit under the name of Prince of Persia 2 : The Shadow and the Flame.  The game comes at a cost, but believe me it is very good.  It costs $ 2.99 (Rs.199.00 on Google Play and Rs.170.00 on Apple Store).

As I have written above the game is in continuum of the PC classic Brøderbund game, Prince of Persia, which came to PCs on 1993.  Ubisoft had redone the theme and graphics and optimized the controls especially for touchscreen devices.  But the game play is still the same, you have to rescue your princess.  To achieve that you may have to jump, duck, fight and solve puzzles along with way.

You can watch the trailer of the game below :

The game has 14 levels  which are rendered in stunning 3D visuals. The other features of the game include :
* Discover an exciting new combat system with multiple enemies and tactical challenges.
* Unleash devastating combos and unlock even more powerful ones as you progress.
* Acquire new weapons for increasingly thrilling fight sequences.

INTUITIVE CONTROLS DESIGNED FOR TOUCHSCREENS
* Experience the highly-acclaimed Prince of Persia platforming gameplay.
* Choose between gesture-based touch controls or the classic virtual joystick.
* Perform fluid and acrobatic moves to overcome challenges, or go step-by-step with “Cautious Mode”.

EXTEND YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH SOCIAL CONNECTIVITY
* Unlock achievements and ascend the leaderboards.
* Share you scores with Facebook integration.

The game is available in  English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Japanese, Chines, Korean, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Turkish and Arabic languages.

The YouTube Upload is a simple App designed to let you share your videos on YouTube on the go with your YouTube account. The only problem with the App is that it has been limited to only Lumia range of Nokia smart phones running on Windows Phone 8. And though the Windows Phone store lists that the App is available for all Lumia phones, there are news reports that the App is only available for the newly launched Nokia Lumia 1020 as of now.

However, if the reports are indeed true, it is bound to come to your Windows Phone 8 Lumia Phone soon.  But as the App is free there is no harm in trying to download it.  To download it visit the Windows Phone Store here.

Now even your children can appear for TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) in India through 'TOEFL Junior Test'

The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) pronounced as tofal is a premier English Language Test conducted by Eductational Testing Service. For the uninitiated, passing TOEFL is mandatory for obtaining admissions in most of the North America and UK based colleges and universities.  Additionally, institutions such as government agencies, licensing bodies, businesses, or scholarship programs require the applicant to have passed this test. It may kindly be noted that the TOEFL scores are valid for two years from the date of passing.

ETS the organisation behind the TOEFL has said that the junior test will measure the degree to which younger students(your child) has attained "language proficiency representative of English-medium instructional environments" which essentially means that it will find out how good your child is for future English medium education. They have further added that it is meant at serving as a general progress measure to give schools, teachers, parents and students an objective measure of the students' English-language progress. It can help measure developing English communication skills in preparation of future studies in English (which should be read as in US, Canada or UK).

As per their spokesperson the test will have three sections. The first section consists of listening comprehension will test the ability to listen for basic, interpersonal purposes as well as academic and instructional purposes. The next one deals with reading comprehension section will gauge the ability to read and understand academic and non-academic texts.  And finally the last one is on language form and meaning will test the ability to demonstrate proficiency in key enabling skills such as grammar and vocabulary.

If you are interested you can visit the ETS website here and find out more about it.

All Your Bases Are Belong To Us Meme is now on Google Play Games App if you unlock the secret Konami code.  Readers will remember that Google had launched a Google Play Games App few days back to form a gaming hub just like the Apple Game Center so that Android users can match their gaming skills and achievements at a common place.  Google Play Games App lets you discover the games that your friends and acquaintances may be playing as well as give a central Android leaderboard where you can compare the scores of your rivals and friends.

Now back to the main topic.  Google has nested a nice Easter Egg in the Google Play Games App to make the App more interesting to you.  The Easter Egg is based on the Konami code and gives you a nice translation(or mis) of All Your Bases Are Belong To Us meme.

This was first reported by the Android Police and you can visit their site here.  To enable the Easter Egg you have to swipe your finger around the app like the Konami code (up, up, down, down, left, right, left right) will bring up a virtual keypad with three button viz. A, B and Start. Pressing B, A and then Start will unlock an achievement which is dubbed as “All your game are belong to us”.

You can get the Google Play Games App from Google Play here to enjoy the Easter Egg.
