The world biggest library of information, the Wikipedia will now let you edit articles both from Wiki as well as your sandbox. Wikipedia as we know is a great repository of information and there are times when we need to edit it on the go. The newly updated wikipedia page when opened from your smart phone or tablet will give you a small pencil Icon at the top in you sign it on to it. Click on that and now you can edit the article.
Once you click on the pencil Icon you will be led to a desktop like editing interface along with a preview of any changes you make before you can save and update the Wiki site. Strange thing is that Wikipedia has not launched/updated a App either for iOS or for Android incorporating this change.
In another linked news, the AIRCEL users in India will have free access to Wikipedia. This is part of the 'Wikipedia Zero' the Wiki's attempt to make the billion GB information it has on its sites available to the last man on earth. The Aircel is the first mobile service operator in India to sign on to this service and provide the information free of cost to its users.
Amit Kapoor, Senior Manager, Mobile Partnerships, Wikimedia Foundation said this about the Wikipedia Zero
“It is our mission to provide free access to knowledge for everyone in the world. It’s only fitting then that today we announced our first Wikipedia Zero partnership launch in India, the world’s second most populous country with over 1.2 billion people,”
The Wikimedia guys are also going to incorporate the support for VisualEditor, a new visual interface for editing Wikipedia. VisualEditor effectively removes the need to learn the complex wiki markup language, thereby making editing simpler for both new and experienced users. However there is no word about an update or a standalone App for the above purpose.
